Vice President Leni Robredo claimed her support over the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) report as the increasing number of teenage pregnancies call for national emergency last October 28, 2019.
According to the POPCOM statistics, about 1.2 million babies are born yearly, with over 30k teen moms being pregnant pulling down the economy with a negative 33 billion pesos.
But this is not the only problem. There are cases of Human Immuno- Deficiency Virus (HIV), premature births and miscarriages happening every time a teenage mom gives birth to a child.
As stated earlier, early pregnancy does not do any good to anyone that is why it is questionable why many young people engage in this kind of intercourse, unless they lack proper sex education or just mere curiosity.
Clearly a red flag, engaging on sexual intercourse in your younger years should stop. That is why the introduction of sex education is crucial on the development of children, not just to quench their curiosity but to also help them protect themselves from sexual assaults.
Sex Education was reviewed by the Department of Education (DepEd) as one of the possible way to curb the incidences of early pregnancy on women although the department only issued the guidelines on its implementation last year 2018.
To clarify, what we need is an imitative, placebo program that does not just prohibit sex, but also simulate what would happen once subjected to its worst- case scenario. Something not just limited on discussion, but rather real fieldwork to help them realize what a victim of early pregnancy experience without having themselves tainted.
So, to speak, this answer is not just some remedy but rather awareness towards the danger of early pregnancy. Sex Education develops the character of children towards intercourses, and must be implemented.
