Blue Whales pummel Guardians to knot Provincial return

After their last year’s heart-breaking loss to their all-time rival Juan Sumulong Warriors, the CAYS girls basketball team are back to their winning ways – this time by drubbing Siena College-Taytay Guardians, 44-28, – once again in the 2019 Municipal Meet Girls’ Basketball finals at the SC gymnasium on August 9.

The Blue Whales stronghold showed an impressive title comeback that saw them go for a 3-0 finish in the elimination round, gaining a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals against the Guardians to earn a trip to the Provincial Athletic Meet.

Graduating skipper Reanne Bolea, who was injured in their last year’s defeat, led the charge for the Blue Whales, scoring a game-high 15 points, including a back-to-back triples in their rally in the third frame, to end her final Municipal Meet appearance, donning for the blue and white, with a bang.

The first 10 minutes of the championship game has been rough for the both finalists as they only settled for 8-4 tally coming into the second frame.

The lady ballers’ offense showed up in the start of the third quarter after the Guardians held them to degraded percentage in the first half, 14-11, not letting their opponent to have a taste of the lead, Bolea took over, scoring 7 markers in their 15-10 run to bring a 29-21 advantage in the fourth.

Casimiro denied Siena’s shot for a championship as fourth-year guard Raji Detera anchored a personal five to naught run to secure the gold medal, two minutes remaining in the pay-off period

“Sa una talaga naiiwan kami ng kalaban, tinatakbuhan kami kaya gano’n ‘yung score kaya nakatulong talaga yung championship experience namin para makapag-adjust sa ibinigay kong bagong gagawin sa offense at defense, at nagawa naman ‘yun nga mga bata,” winning coach Joseph Nama remarked.

“Mas paghuhusayan pa naming ‘yung mga training kasi may mga makakasama din kami galing sa ibang teams kaya nando’n pa rin ‘yung pag-aadjust,” he stated when asked regarding the preparations for the upcoming Provincial Meet.

In addition, Detera tallied 11 points while third-year center Cassie Montawar, who also led the defense for the Blue Whales, added eight to fuel the balanced scoring effort of the Blue Whales.
